The Research of the Expression and Emotional Characteristics of Art Therapy Using New Media
Han Joo-Yeun

Abstract
In modern art therapy, new media are not restricted to passive means of recording and storage but serve as active and virtual therapeutic tools which generate novel emotional and sensual features different from those of the existing art media. This study investigates the possibility of the art therapeutic application through the characteristics of aesthetic experiences and expressions of new media. Since new media present processes and systems in dematerialized fashions, spectators become participants involved in creation and obtain holistic sensory experiences. This type of interaction between media and participants produces unique emotional effects. In particular, new media in art therapy provide virtual environments where one can safely express, reflect, and reconstruct one¡¯s own ego; therefore, immersive emotional behaviors such as communication and self-expression increase. Moreover, artistic acts in new media exist as dematerialized process in virtual space, bringing about an ambivalent emotional state, namely shallow emotional distance and deep projection. As such, new media can be combined with various forms of art for multiple therapeutic purposes. Therefore, therapists should understand the characteristics and symptoms of their clients and determine specific functions and directions of new media use.
